Internet Explorer 5 required Outlook Express 5 to save Web Archive files (see MHTML). Nearly two years later, a similar system, using a similar method of adaptive filtering, appeared as a feature of Microsoft Outlook. It was speculated on various websites and newsgroups at that time, that the feature was not stable enough for the mass market. Like Internet Explorer, Outlook Express 4 can run on Mac System 7, OS 8, and OS 9.Īt one point, in a later beta version of Outlook Express 5, Outlook Express contained a sophisticated and adaptive spam filtering system however this feature was removed shortly before launch. The Windows executable file for Outlook Express, msimn.exe, is a holdover from the Internet Mail and News era. Internet Mail and News handled only plain text and rich text ( RTF) email, lacking HTML email. Version 2.0 was released at the end of 1996. This add-on precedes the Internet Mail profile for Microsoft Exchange 4.0 bundled in Windows 95. Version 1.0 was released as Microsoft Internet Mail and News in 1996 following the Internet Explorer 3 release. On Windows XP, it also integrates with Windows Messenger. Outlook Express uses the Windows Address Book to store contact information and integrates tightly with it. The similar names lead many people to conclude incorrectly that Outlook Express is a stripped-down version of Microsoft Outlook. The two programs do not share a common codebase, but they do share a common architectural philosophy.

Maybe there are reasons I am not seeing, but it seems MS intentionally makes moving to a newer OS difficult by needlessly changing things. I had to spend hours rebuilding my playlists. Got that resolved, then tried to move my music in to Windows Media Player. It insisted on using my MS sign-in (so all my contact and settings were lost. The joy in finding that email program soon vanished when I tried to use Skype. Also it imported my address book and email account details. Most importantly, it imported my emails within their folders.

I paid the $25 for the PRO version after a coupla days playing with the free version. I don't know if it is inappropriate to mention others software, but I did find a solution to my question above - it is called OE Classic. I'll be the first to complain now when MS is mentioned. MS ignored desktop users (with 8.0 and 8.1), and then they ignored long time home email users (by scrapping OE). I guess I'll have to research other email options for use on this Win 10 computer - any suggestions? This computer with Win 10 is still too new to scrap (it has an i7 processor). But meanwhile I had heard that Outlook Express was abandoned, but I never had the time to sort it out, so I stayed with my XP.
